Goal Type:

Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

My first attempt at long distance as an adult.

Kirkuk, Iraq Half Marathon- 1:48:?? forgot seconds.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I will be entering the Eisenhower Marathon in Abilene, KS. This will be my first marathon and I'm pretty ambitious. I want to qualify for Boston.

I want to run 3:05 for Eisenhower, but ultimately want run sub 3:00 by the end of 2011.

Long-Term Running Goals:

As far as long term goals I would like just to stay healthy and injury free....and fast!

Qualify for the Iron Man Tri in Kona and finish in spectacular fashion!

Personal:

I'm currently in the Army and I love that I'm faster than all my Soldiers (who are a lot younger than me). It just seems the older I get the faster I am.

I'm deployed, but I should be back in the states pretty soon.

Being in the Army definitely puts a toll on family and unfortunately I'm divorced, but I have a beautiful daughter who melts my heart.

Today was the start of my marathon training with a buddy of mine. We started out just with a light jog and set no goal just run to shake the cobb webs. We are training for the Eisenhower Marathon in Abilene, KS 9 APR 2011. It is about 11 weeks away...tooo easy. Well I say that now.

Today I did a speed workout. I warmed up for half a mile and then did 6 x 800 meters. I was trying to run each 800 at a 10K pace of 6:41 mins per mile. After each interval I jogged 400 meters. I then ran half a mile after the interval training.

1st 800- 3:00 mins

2nd 800- 3:20 mins

3rd 800- 3:19 mins

4th 800- 3:20 mins

5th 800- 3:22 mins

6th 800- 3:21 mins

My right calf was tight about half way through the workout.

Today I felt ok. My calves have been a little sore, so I took a lil longer to stretch them. I have a training partner and today I was running with him on his marathon pace for 4 miles. His pace is a lil slower than mine, but I think my calves were tight and thats why I took it easy at first. The 5th mile I picked it up a little and the 6th was definitley close to my marathon pace.

Welcome soldier! Everyone defines things a bit different, so your best bet might be to get your hands on Jack Daniels running book. In short, VO2 max are going to be your "speed work", that is at mile pace or faster. Threshold is your anaerobic threshold pace. that magic place that you can run forever at, where you are breathing kinda heavy, but not in anaerobic land. Some define it as your 10k pace-i take someone's VVO2 (or fastest pace they ca n run one single mile) and add a minute (or 40 seconds if they are in EXCELLENT racing shape) OR add about 30 seconds to your average pace that you run a 5k. There are amazingly wonderful "AT" or threshold workouts that will give you great gains. __This is a very simplified explanantion...

From Pittbully Running Project on Tue, Feb 08, 2011 at 01:25:30 from 95.170.209.139

Karen thanks for the explaination and I will definitely get ahold of the JD running book.

I tried to run at MP (Marathon Pace) but only did it for my first mile. I woke up a lil later, kind of threw off my schedule and was late meeting my running partner.

I felt real groggy this morning from the muscle relaxers last night. But the stubborn soreness from my calves and right knee were gone.

After the run I felt good, but my calves let me know they were still there and didn't approve me pushing the rest of the body.

Welcome to the blog. We have a handful of bloggers that are in the military. Some of them are actively deployed, and some have recently come home. Good luck!

Burt, thanks for the warm welcome! I'm going head first with this running thing. I found this site, and I was like "why not". I have some buddies who I run with and I told them about the "Blog". What are some ways to get more involved with the site and other members?

From Burt on Mon, Feb 07, 2011 at 15:14:20 from 206.213.44.111

I just find that if you comment on other people's blogs, they will comment on yours. Don't be shy. A couple of other features are the Mileage Board and the Race Reports.

Hi. Thanks for the birthday wishes!! and wow YOU ARE IN IRAQ?!!! Welcome. BTW BURT is a great RESOURCE, his advice right on (today : D). Just comment away and soon you'll find MANY RUNNING friends here : D. I think April (seeaprilrun) is running that marathon in Kansas.

Thanks Julie. A little validation every now and then is nice. Usually I get people like Scott Wesseman telling the new people that I'm a stalker! LOL!

From Karen on Mon, Feb 07, 2011 at 23:22:26 from 69.171.160.2

Oh, Burt is a stalker...

Go easy tomorrow and don't worry about pace. You've had 2 days in a row where you are trying to hammer out marathon paces. best to take an easy day than have to pop muscle relaxers...

Oh, did I mention Burt? he's GREAT!!!

Hey, welcome to the blog - I just came back from Iraq (Baghdad) and did my first marathon too, about 12 days after getting home. I got some good advice from the runners here along the way, this is a really helpful website.

Also, there is someone else on the blog who is doing Eisenhower too (she is the defending champ in fact), check it out: http://april.fastrunningblog.com/

Hey! You must be from Kansas?! I am looking forward to the Eisenhower marathon--this is a great first marathon for you! The course is gently rolling as advertised and runs very fast! While there is not a whole lot of spectators the ones that are there are great and you definitely feel supported out on the course! Good luck with your training and I hope to see you in Abilene April 9th!

From Pittbully Running Project on Wed, Feb 09, 2011 at 15:18:33 from 95.170.209.139

Joe thanks, and I'm glad you made it back safe. I see you ran the Houston Marathon. Thats where I'm from and your a beast for knocking out a marathon that soon after redeployment. I can't wait to get back when I go on leave. I have already received some good advise so far with my training, cant wait for more.

April I'm not from KS but I really like the place. I'm stationed at Ft. Riley and a bunch of people in my unit are going to be running too. It would be nice to see you too...Champ...lol. Is it best to stay the night in Abilene before the race?

From seeaprilrun on Wed, Feb 09, 2011 at 19:37:59 from 72.205.231.214

If you want to stay the night book now--last year I waited too long and there were no rooms so I had to stay in Junction City--almost would've been better to get up early and drive. It's a pretty early starter though(7 am?), so staying the night is probably ideal(in case you're one of those people who can actually sleep the night before a marathon LOL).

From Pittbully Running Project on Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 03:44:27 from 95.170.209.139

April...Ok, I'm gonna start looking for some places today and hope to find one at a resonable price. I think I won't sleep good the night before Eisenhower, I'm gonna be nervous!...lol

Karen, the rest day was awesome, but I think since I called it a rest day...my stomach was calling it a cheat day! I ate so much junk, but it felt soooo good!

From SlowJoe on Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 09:56:41 from 131.59.200.82

I grew up in Houston too, which was one of the big reasons I wanted to run it (plus it's flat). To sign up for it next January you have to enter a lottery this summer, but I recommend it for sure - it goes through downtown, Montrose, Galleria area, Memorial park etc.

We decided to go easy today. At about mile 4 or 5 a loud boom erupted, then two more smaller ones. I didnt run any faster but it startle me a lil.

I also won my first road bike on ebay and should be waiting for me when I get back! Can't wait to ride it.

Warmed up today on the elliptical for 1 mile and then stretched before hitting the road. I ran the little loop which is 4.7 miles then added a lil more to complete 5. It was windy, but it was nice. In the middle if the run caught myself going a lil fast, so I slowed down (just a lil bit, what can I say I felt good). All in all good training.

Today was "Speed" day. Rounded up a few other people who said they wanted to train with me. They didn’t look as happy as I looked at the being of speed day. We did 6 x 800, with a 400 meter jog in between each. As we were jogging during our warming up, another unit was about to conduct their running portion of the PT test on the track. The Soldiers were stretching and lining up at the start. I couldn’t resist and I jumped in the starting line. I took off when the NCOIC said go and there went my training pace out the window. I was deciding if I was going to do mile repeats instead, but at the last second didn't. But my first 2 x 800's were pretty fast and it was fun.

Organized a Half-marathon for those who missed it, and one last push to do a PR. Only had 5 takers though, including myself. We did the same route as the half-marathon my unit organized back in November. It was raining, windy, and overcast….just the perfect conditions for a race….lol. We were supposed to do it on the 24th but due to OPTEMPO and mission requirements we had to do it today. We took off with a slight headwind, but soon it became a tailwind and I started making progress. I felt good the whole time, well rested- probably cuz the 5K I was scheduled to run got cancelled yesterday…so I just took the day off. Around mile 9 though I was day dreaming and had to get back on pace, probably thinking about going home…lol. My goal was just to beat my last attempt back in November even though it wasn’t going to be official, but real enough for me. Stayed up real late receiving the new guys equipment and packing up my own. Got out of work close to 0200 and had to be in at 0600 for lay outs for customs. After the container was sealed I took some me time and went on a lil run to loosen my legs from my half marathon glory. Legs were tight but it felt good just getting back on the road pondering about going home and seeing my daughter. And also thinking it would be nice running on different routes as well.

Tired legs + winds+ hills = Epic fail on tempo run @ marathon pace.

I started off with a 1.01 warm-up and was unsure of the route since I really didnt know it. If I knew it had so many hills I would of opted for a flatter route. I took off and hit my first mile and a lil fast on my second. After that though it was all downhill (and uphill too lol).I was going to run 7 miles but my legs couldnt take no more.

After a nice nap. I decided to get my interval training done. It was raining all day and temp was dropping, but luckly the rain let up to let me get my workout on. I did 3 x 2 miles intervals with a 800 meter jog/rest. I started with a 1 mile w/u around the track. Everything was going fine until my garmin lost power after my second 2 miler. I ran the last one in the blind, but at least I did it. Didn't to the last 800 meter rest, just walked over to my car cuz I was cold.

1st interval 12:19.93 @ 06:10 AP

2nd interval 13:11.39 @ 06:36 AP

Woke up this morning for a 12 mile run. I started of ok then around 2.5 miles I started have chafing pain from riding my bike a few days ago. So at mile 3 stopped and walked 1.4 miles back to the barracks. I felt disappointed and it killed me mentally.

After running a few errands, eatting, nap, and gops of vasoline, I was ready to try again. Opted for a lil shorter distance since I have a big run day tomorrow and just did 9 miles.

Today seemed to be a crappy day for training. Partly cloudy, temp 38-41 degrees, 12 mph winds out of the NE. I put off my long day this morning since it didn’t look so promising outside. Then after lunch I logged in to the Blog and started seeing everyone’s miles already posted (seeaprilrun especially impressive). That motivated me to run the longest distance I've ever ran in my life. I was just going to do 16 but I felt good when I started, so I thought what the heck lets go longer.

I ran on the Linear Trail again...nice and flat, with a lot of trees to break the wind. At the 9 mile turn around the winds died down significantly....and what a relief! At mile 14 it started to sleet/rain and I popped in my head phones for a lil extra motivation.

After the watch was stopped my legs felt like rubber and I could barely walk back to my truck. What a great feeling!

AM-PT started again and I was in charge of the "fast group". So myself and two other Soldiers ran around the airfield smoking the rest of the Troop. We looked like heroes when the rest of the Troop was cooling down (probably there for 15 mins cuz they did only did 2 miles) as we just showed up out of the cold night.

PM-Today was also my interval day. Goal was to run 6x1600 with a 400 meter jog/rest between sets at 10 seconds faster than MP. After the 5th 1600 and 400 m I just could not go anymore. My calves started becoming real sore and just couldn't put them through that pain. I also started having some discomfort on the outside of my right big toe. I think it might be an ingrown toenail....ahhhhh...nooooo! People were on he track today, so my splits were me just showing off, maybe thats why I couldn't complete it today..too fast.....lol
